Personal Reflection

Make a Wave by Demi Lavato & Joe Jonas

Lyrics:

J: They say the beat of a butterflies wings, can set off a storm a world away
D: What if they’re right and the smallest of things, can power the strongest hurricane
J: What if it all begins inside
D: We hold the key that turns the tide

Within the first verse of this song, the lyrics immediately refer to the idea of the butterfly effect. It elaborates on this concept that a small act can quickly and easily escalate to grow into something big and either detrimental or beneficial for the environment.

CHORUS
Both : Just a pebble in the water
D: ooh
D: Can set the sea in motion
D: ooh
Both : A simple act of kindness
D: ohh
J: Can stir the widest ocean
Both : If we show a little love heaven knows what we could change oh yeah so throw a pebble in the water
J: Oh Yeah
Both : Mave a wave
D: Make a wave
J: Make a wave, make a wave

The chorus above explains two different instances of a harmful outcome of the butterfly effect and a beneficial outcome of the butterfly effect. First, the singers describe that the tide of the ocean can alter right after a pebble is thrown into the water which can be seen as both a good or bad thing. This serves as a metaphor about how little acts that may harm the environment such as not recycling, can accumulate to produce one big issue of having too much garbage. On the other hand, it can be a metaphor for good in saying that when one person is able to engage in a “green” act of kindness towards the earth, it can turn into a collective effort of others who take responsibility and do the same thus benefiting the well-being of the environment.

VERSE 2
D: The single choice to take a stand
J: And reach out your hand to someone in need
(help somebody)
D: Don’t fool yourself and say you can’t
J: You never know what can grow from just one seed
D: yeahhh so come with me and seize the day, this world may never be the same

I interpreted this verse to mirror the idea of education. Once one is knowledgeable, it would be great if they pass on that knowledge and educate others. The overall message of this song is that in reaching out to others to help them understand, the seed on knowledge can grow to form one big change. Thus, if each and every one of us takes the initiative and the responsibility to “go green” we can encourage others to do the same and save the environment now, for the future.

CHORUS
Both : Just a pebble in the water
D: Just a pebble in the water
Both : Can set the sea in motion
J: Can set the sea in motion
Both : A simple act of kindness
D: ohhh
both : Can stir the widest ocean
J: Can stir the widest ocean
Both : If we show a little love
J: If we show a little love
Both : Heaven knows what we could change
D: Heaven knows what we could change
Both: so throw a pebble in the water
J: throw a pebble in the water
Both : Make a wave
D: Make a wave
J: Make a wave

BRIDGE
D: Yea yea yea yea yeahhh
J : Make a wave, make a wave
D: Make a wave Yeah
J: Show a little love make a wave, seize the day yeahh
D: make a wave, heaven knows what we could change
J: ohh
D: So let’s show a little love, you never know what we can change
J: So throw a pebble in the water

D: mmmmmmmm
Both : Make a wave, make a wave
J: oohh wooah
D:ohhh ohh ohhh ohhhhhhh

The commercial above is called Disney’s Friends for Change, which airs on Disney Channel and targets younger viewers. The background music is the song “Send it On” by some of the Disney Channel Stars who hope to send a message to its listeners that in sending on the message of helping the environment, more and more involvement can cause the world around us to stop from deteriorating. A catchy, yet crucial part of the song that captures this idea as well as the idea of the butterfly affect is “With one little action, a chain reaction will never stop…” In this part of the chorus, the butterfly effect is explained in terms of friends coming together to make a change for the greater good of the planet and its residents. I absolutely admire Disney Channel for causes like this that they are undertaking and promoting to the younger generation. In educating the kids, it is smart to address big issues like this in a fun and easy to understand way. In involving famous stars of Disney Channel shows to the speak on behalf of the Friends for Change cause, the issue becomes appealing to young viewers who better listens, learns and understands the cause. What better way to get their attention and teach them at a young age of large issues at hand than to address them when they are younger. Therefore, I believe that in exposing the public to these issues, they will grow up being aware of their surroundings and are able to start early on knowing about “…projects that save energy, save water, create less waste and heal the earth…”
